Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day has done a brilliant experiment. He had a bicycle made that turns the opposite way of steering. So if you steer to the right, you will go left and the other way round. What will happen? Watch the film.

Why is this so interesting? Because many PhD students think that if they KNOW something, they are actually able to DO it as well. They know about productivity, about procrastination, about writing, about planning their day. And they think that by knowing it all, they are also capable of delivering it all.

However, the step from going to BE ABLE to do something to actually DOING it, is skipped completely.

How come many PhD students are delayed? Because they think they know how to do something, so they will be able to do it easy. And that is the bottleneck.

Asking help and support will boost the process. But that seems easier said than done. If you would ask for help to support you though, for instance by asking a PhD Coach (like I am), you will definitely speed up this process.

How am I so sure of that? Because of my own experience: I have a personal coach as well. Everybody can use a helping hand now and then. Always!
